Contractors:

Too Many Variances

Medium sized shopfitting business - both manufacturing and contracting

Problem:
management accounts always late and never right

Reason:
we found overly complex accounting systems. For example, product standard costs and variances so embedded in the accounting systems that basic questions "how much have we purchased?" could not be answered

Solution:
start again, much simpler

All Systems in Place - Not Producing the Goods

Medium sized contractor, expert in remote locations workings

Problem:
job cost information being produced but in a format of limited value to management

Solution:
redesign management financial reports, mine the data base to make better use of information previously overlooked

Brilliant Engineer - Cost Structure

One of the two best engineers in Australia

Problem:
not keen on accounting but needed clear, precise and relevant management financial information

Solution:
sometimes "less is more"; took the razor to his management financial information, simplifying by focusing on key performance indicators
